TMP-Aero30 - Air Balloon for Military Parachutist Training

This new solution necessitated the development of specific modifications for static line jumps.

It has been successfully tested:
In Paris
drop tests from the Air de Paris balloon (ARZ 696 with 70 to 140 kg loads, elevation of 80 meters / 176 to 308 lbs, elevation of 260 feet)
In Yemen
first operational model delivered to Yemen in March 2009 and successfully tested since April 2009

A simple training tool for parachute schools

  • Installation of a landing site, without a hangar. Several years on the same site.

Unbeatable cost-efficient and economic performance:

  • Capacity: 20 parachutists lifted to 300 meters (984 feet) every 15 minutes.
  • Economical cost: up to 50 times less than a jump from a helicopter or plane.
  • Carbon footprint/Ecological impact: nearly 0. Consumes no more electricity than that required to operate an elevator.

Two possible versions: stationary or mobile
The stationary version has proved its effectiveness in Yemen within a specific framework.
It requires a large zone reserved for the use of the balloon.
Most European schools must use a drop zone for traditional training using planes and the balloon cannot be installed in the center of such zones.
The mobile version that has been patented.

How the stationary TMP-AERO30 works:

  • The balloon is installed in the middle of a jump zone.
  • The parachutists can land anywhere.
  • The zone is reserved exclusively for the balloon

The vehicle allows the balloon to be positioned in the place best-adapted to the direction of the wind in order to take into account the drift.
The zone can also be used for traditional drops from a plane.

The system has been running since March 2009, a few miles from Hodeidah in a desert zone. It is operated by the local army.


Technical and Operational Characteristics

  • Required parking area: 60 meters in diameter (approx. 197 feet)
  • Elevation: 300 meters (approx. 984 feet)
  • Recommended drop zone: 400 meters (approx. 1312 feet) in every direction
  • Operational team for the jump: 1 pilot, 1 onboard dispatcher, 1 ground operator
  • When not flying: the balloon is fastened and guarded
  • Capacity: 20 parachutists every 15 minutes
  • Weather limits on use: In flight: 12 knots in gusts - moored: 60 knots in gusts
  • Life expectancy of the aerostatics part: between 5 and 8 years
  • Life expectancy of the mechanical part: between 10 and 15 years
  • Yearly helium consumption: 500 m3
  • Total volume of the balloon: 6000 m3
  • Pressurization: small balloon of ventilated air
  • Certification: certificate of airworthiness awarded by the DGAC
